Vents from a volcano are called fumaroles.  Gases in the vents are super-heated and crystals form on the edges, as the gases cool.  In this case, Quartz formed first, Amethyst followed in the presence of iron - thus the purple color.  Finally, Calcite accreted on a portion of the Amethyst crystals.  The other casing is brick-baked earth.
